Hello, I’m Donald W. Hill, MD, FACP, a physician and author with a unique background that blends medical expertise and a venture into the world of fiction. My writing journey, while perhaps unconventional for a hematologist/oncologist, has produced compelling works that blend medical plausibility with imaginative storytelling.
My path is one of diverse accomplishment. I’m a native Houstonian and graduated from Trinity University in 1978 before earning my medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston (1982). My postgraduate training in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology at the University of New Mexico (1987) laid the foundation for my medical career, spanning over three decades and encompassing various settings, from multispecialty clinics to solo practice, academia, and clinical research. As a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, my scholarly publications extend beyond the realm of medicine into the captivating world of fiction.
While I’m a published scholar in my medical field, Vampiro marks only my second venture into serial fiction. My prior work, The DNR Trilogy, stands as a groundbreaking achievement, setting the stage for my collaborative effort on Vampiro. Interestingly, despite co-authoring a vampire-themed novel, I openly admit a personal aversion to the science fiction genre and specifically the subgenre of vampirism. This personal perspective adds an intriguing layer to my contribution to Vampiro, where I was tasked with providing a scientifically plausible explanation for human vampirism from a hematologist/oncologist’s perspective.
Vampiro is a collaborative project with Thomas Cavaretta. My role was to ground the fantastical elements of the story in medical reality, a challenge I embraced despite my personal feelings about the subject matter. The result is a novel that aims to blend the thrilling aspects of vampire lore with a scientifically informed perspective. Whether I succeeded in this ambitious goal is, as the text states, ultimately for the reader to decide.
My unique background and personal approach to writing make me a fascinating figure in the literary world. My willingness to step outside my comfort zone and tackle a genre I don’t personally enjoy speaks volumes about my dedication to my craft. My work offers a unique blend of medical knowledge and imaginative storytelling, creating a reading experience that is both engaging and thought-provoking. The success of Vampiro and The DNR Trilogy establishes me as an author worth exploring for readers interested in a blend of medical expertise and fictional storytelling.
